A Little Kindness Goes Along Way

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

No matter where you go, someone’s going to make you mad. That’s just the way it goes. Welcome to life, right? Of course, it’s part of nature’s way of showing everyone that life isn’t a bed of roses. People can be so rude and vagabondish that it can sometimes be ridiculous.

I travel quite frequently across America. I love America. I love all of the towns that I visit. Sometimes, you’re just going to encounter that person that doesn’t like you. This has happened to me on numerous occasions. I find it quite funny. I consider myself average looking, nice guy, real polite, and pleasant to be around. Could it be that I have “one of those faces?” I say that jokingly, but it’s true. Have you ever encountered someone that you just didn’t like, for no apparant reason? Of course you have, everyone has.

I was in the South last year, visiting my family there. I stayed at an RV park that was out in the country. It wasn’t very spacious, but it was nice. I was barbecuing, minding my own business and the owner of the place asked me to leave. I’m not going to disclose his name or the name of the RV park, because I’m not that kind of guy. Simply put, the guy just didn’t like me. I thought about going on an internet crusade to tell the world what kind of business this guy ran, but I didn’t. I let it go. I figured that if he would do it to me, a somewhat noted personality, it was a hopeless case.

I give the above example to state that: It’s going to happen. People are going to make you mad. How are you going to respond to the next person that offends you? In America, you have to act in a civilized manner with everyone, or you’re suppose to. The next time someone insults you, call them by their name in a polite manner. Address them as Mr. or Mrs. and simply state, “How have I offended you?” In most cases, if you weren’t doing anything wrong, they won’t know how to respond.

The message of this article is to just show tolerance and respect for one another. You never know who you may be talking to. That person may be a celebrity or a relative to the President. You just never know what doors may open for you by being kind. You also will never know what doors just closed for you by being cruel.

Bonding With Your Partner – Without Candles, Wine Or Lingerie!

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Summary: Many partners attempt to bond with candles, wine or lingerie, only to find their time together feeling flat, empty and passionless. In this article, discover what really creates bonding, intimacy and passion with your partner.

A journalist interviewed me regarding intimacy in relationships. One of her questions was, “What are some of the easy ways in which husband and wife can bond – without candles and wine and expensive lingerie?”

Easy ways? Well, it depends on what you mean by easy!

Bonding has nothing to do with candles, wine and expensive lingerie. It has to do with INTENT. In any given moment we are in one of two possible intents:

The intent to have control over getting love and avoiding pain

The intent to learn about being loving to ourselves and to others

Virtually all of us have learned many ways of trying to have control over getting love and avoiding pain. We learned these protective behaviors when we were children, and as adults we unconsciously continue these learned controlling behaviors, such as anger, criticism, withdrawal, resistance, or compliance. For most people, these protective, controlling behaviors have become automatic and habitual. As soon as any fear is triggered, we automatically protect against the fear by arguing, blaming, attacking, judging, shutting down, resisting, or giving in. In relationships, the fears of rejection and engulfment – of losing the other or losing ourselves – generally underlie our protective behavior.

In a relationship, if one or both partners are closed, protected, controlling, then they cannot emotionally connect with each other. No matter how much time they spend together with candles, wine or expensive lingerie, the connection will not be there when one or both are closed and protected. Ironically, when the intent is to get love or avoid pain, what we create is a lack of love and much pain. Our intent to control brings about the very things we are trying to avoid with our controlling behavior.

Our own intent is the one thing we do have control over. We do not have control over another’s intent to be open and loving, but we do have control over our own intent to be open to learning about what it means to be loving ourselves and to others. However, it takes both people being in the intent to learn for partners to emotionally bond.

If both are open to learning, then they will be emotionally available to each other and can bond with a touch, a smile, or a kind word. Bonding has to do with the energy between them, not with anything external like candles, and the energy comes from their intent. A controlling intent creates a heavy, dark, hard, closed-hearted energy, while the open-to-learning intent creates a light, soft, open-hearted energy.

The big challenge in relationships is to stay open to learning about loving. Because we automatically and unconsciously revert to our protective, controlling behavior in the face of fear, being open to learning needs to be a conscious choice. Developing the ability to make a conscious choice regarding your intent is a learning process. The hallmark of higher consciousness is being able to choose your intent each and every moment, even in the face of fear.

When relationship partners are both able to reliably choose to be open to learning about loving themselves and each other, they create a sweet and safe environment for their love to flourish. Then candles, vacations, and lingerie can enhance their experience with each other – the icing on the cake.

Easy ways to bond? Staying conscious and open to learning is not easy! The concept is simple, but doing it is far from easy. Yet devoting yourself to learning to stay open to learning in the face of fear may be the most fulfilling and rewarding experience in your life!

Drum Tips – Dealing with Bass Drum “Creep”

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Bass drum creep does NOT refer to the scary guy with the bass drum, it’s the term used to describe the frustrating situation when your kick drum starts sliding further and further away from you with each stroke of your bass drum pedal.

Setting up your kit on a good thick rug or a carpet that the spikes at the end of your bass drum legs can sink their teeth into will generally help keep bass drum creep at bay. (If your bass drum legs don’t have spikes, replace them with ones that do. Any decent drum shop will carry replacement bass drum legs at a reasonable price.)

Make sure your carpet is large enough to fit your whole kit, including your throne. The weight of your body on the throne will help keep the bass drum from sliding away with the whole carpet.
Adjust the bass drum legs so that the front of the drum is an inch or two off the ground and the drum is resting at a slight angle. This shifts more of the drums weight onto the legs themselves and helps the spikes dig in more effectively, which should put an end to most bass drum creep problems.

Sometimes, especially for those of us kicking the drum pretty hard in loud situations, setting up on a carpet is just not enough!

Here is an additional little trick that will END bass drum creep problems.

Take a three foot long 2″x4″ piece of wood. I have some nice fabric glued around it to make it look pretty, provide some protection to the drums, and prevent splinters. Now mark your carpet where you want the front of your bass drum to sit. Drill three quarter inch diameter holes through the wood – one hole in the middle and one near each end.

Using some nice, big, 2 inch washers and 1/4 inch thick bolts – actually bolt the wood to your carpet at the front edge of your bass drum. Make sure to put the flattest part of the bolt on the under side of the carpet so that your carpet still lays pretty flat. I also like to put a layer or two of gaffer’s tape over the end of the bolt so that it does not scratch up any nice wooden floors that happen to be underneath the carpet.

Now when you set up just slide the front of the bass drum right up against the piece of wood you have bolted to the carpet, and it will not slide any further!

It works best if you get the wood wide enough that the legs themselves actually bump up against the wood block although it will work fine with the rim of the drum against the wood block – just be sure to cover the wood with foam or thick fabric to prevent the wood from damaging the rim and lugs of your drum!

Let me know how well it works for you.

Elliptical Exercise Equipment – What To Look For When Buying

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Buying elliptical exercise equipment? There are so many different brands and types of ellipticals out there – it can get confusing! How do you know which one is best for you and how do you avoid buying a lemon?

In order to keep things simple and have the very best buying experience, here are 3 key tips to help you choose the best elliptical exercise equipment:

#1) Price

If you want a quality elliptical trainer, be prepared to spend at least $800. Why? Because most ellipticals under this price point just aren’t built to stand up over the long haul.

Example: My $400 elliptical that I bought from a department store several years back lasted 3 months – 4 if you count the last month it was used as a clothes hanger in my living room.

After 3 months it developed a loud squeaking noise that couldn’t be fixed – no matter how long or hard my handyman husband worked on it.

If I’d been smart enough to spend a bit more, I’d probably still have the elliptical today. In the end it was a huge waste of money and time.

So the bottom line is this: If you’re really serious about getting in shape, you deserve to invest in a piece of exercise equipment that’s going to last you – so be ready to spend a bit more on your elliptical trainer. If you consider how long the elliptical will last you, you actually SAVE money over the long term.

#2) Who Are You Buying It From?

While there are lots of places the sell elliptical exercise equipment – both online and off, make sure they have several years of experience and a solid return policy. If a company has experience selling elliptical equipment, this will make your transaction (and shipping) go much more smoothly.

A solid return policy also gives you peace of mind when buying your elliptical. For example, even if you try your elliptical out in a store, you might get it home and find that after a week it strains your arms or hurts your hips. You want to know that you can return your elliptical without a hassle.

Many specialty fitness stores will offer some kind of return policy and most experienced online elliptical stores also offer you a standard 30 day return policy. But it’s always important to check before you buy.

#3) Upper Body Arms

The beauty of an elliptical trainer is that it offers you a total body workout.

Whereas treadmills and recumbent bikes tend to work mainly the lower body only, ellipticals offer you a chance to burn calories and build strength using upper body arm handles. This means more calories burned in less time.

Surprisingly enough however, not all elliptical trainers offer upper body arms with their units. Make sure you choose an elliptical with upper body workout arms included if this is an option you want.

It usually won’t cost you extra to have upper body arms however one note of caution: Many of the cheaper ellipticals don’t necessarily have the coordination between the arms and legs exactly right. This can result in injury or a less efficient workout.

Rule of Thumb: You should not have to lean over to use the upper body arms.

So there are three things to consider when buying elliptical exercise equipment. Keep these things in mind and you’ll save yourself time and loads of frustration!

The Clothes Babies Need: How You can Help with a Practical Gift Basket

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

When you have a baby, the amount of clothes you have for the baby is very important. Remember, babies manage quite easily to get their clothes filthy, sometimes wearing 3-4 outfits a day. Not to mention that an infant will grow faster than you think, and new baby clothes are often needed. Mothers, fathers or guardians will find them doing markedly excess amounts of laundry once the baby has arrived. So try to give as many outfits as you can to really help them.

A great idea for a baby gift basket is to pile in the infant and toddler attire. Sure you can purchase baby clothes that will fit an infant like a glove as soon as the he or she is born. It will be nice for the mother, father or guardian to go out and show off her baby in great-fitting attire. Unfortunately these little ones grow fast, so if you are giving a baby gift basket at a baby shower, an assortment of sizes may be well appreciated.

Most mothers, fathers and guardians do not mind dressing the baby in clothing that is a bit too big. There is no doubt that it will not be too big for the baby pretty soon. In fact, most often once that he or she is crawling around, the size of the baby’s clothes needed has multiplied.

If you are a mother you already know that the parent, parents or guardian(s) of this child will not believe how quickly a baby outfit can become of no use to them. It was a kind gesture to give them some clothes to start them offbut what do they do when the baby has outgrown everything? It does not take longless than a year before even the big one-piece pajamas and too-big sweat suits have become too small.

To show that you appreciate this fact, it may be a good idea to include even a couple of toddler outfits for the baby gift basket.

And of course, a nice finishing touch for the baby gift basket may be something like little hats, babies can get cold and you never want a baby to be too exposed to the harsh weather, even if it just a little chilly outside, a hat is a perfect solution for the baby to keep warm. Most of our body heat is released through our heads when the weather is cold, so to cover the babies little, probably hairless, or practically hairless head is a very good idea. The same applies with coats, a baby will need both heavy and light coats for the colder season.

Parents or guardians will want to have lots of blankets, burp rags etc. These are more items that are quickly dirtied and need to be washed frequently. So if you would like to go for an attire theme for your friend or family member’s baby shower, these are ideas that are very practical and very important, especially for a family without a whole lot of extra money to be throwing around on baby clothes.

Why You Need a Lesson Plan

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

LESSON PLAN DEVELOPMENT: Lesson plans, believe it or not, are a lot like the maps you have in the back seat of your car. They’re probably not covered with the ketchup and pencil marks that your maps are, but they are directional guides. You need some way of checking to see if you are on the right road in your classroom or on the highway. A lesson plan is really nothing more than a map of where you and your students will be heading for the time you are together. To paraphrase the American Express Card commercial, “Lesson plans — don’t leave home without them.”

“DO I REALLY NEED A LESSON PLAN?” Yes, you do. An important part of the preparation for your session lies in your lesson planning efforts. There are several good reasons for constructing a lesson plan for every session in which you are involved. Properly outlined, a lesson plan will outline the priorities you want to cover in a logical and systematic sequence. The plan will help you stay on the proper track and lead you to your stated objectives without time-consuming tangents and loss of momentum. 3. By staying with your game plan, you are better assured of having your trainees attain the prescribed goals. With a well-constructed format, you’ll be self-confident, knowing that you are prepared in advance. If your session is one that is repeated in other groups, the preparation and planning you have undertaken can be easily used by another instructor in your absence or by you for a different group of trainees.

FOLLOWING THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS: An effective lecture or training presentation is the result of a specific development process. The effort of preparing your lesson is really only the beginning. Once the guidelines for presenting your material have been established, however, maximum impact can be achieved far more certainly and with far less anxiety for the instructor. You can be assured that there will be no waste of time in the classroom. Every minute of the valuable time allotted for training will be used to the fullest by you and your trainees.

Marching In Support of Illegal Activity

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

I’m sickened by the protests around this country of people who want criminals to be given legal status in America.
Make no mistake about it, anyone in this country who did not go through legal immigration channels is a criminal and should face the consequences of their actions.

Why are illegal immigrants better than law abiding people. Why should
illegal immigrants be given preferential treatment?
They shouldn’t. Millions of people around the world are pursuing their immigration status in America through legal means.

Some people have been waiting many years (In some cases over 5 years) to find out if they can immigrate to this great land.
Many people who are legally trying to immigrate to America face similar economic hardships than illegal immigrants.

What do we tell those people? How do we explain that we’re thinking of exonerating the crimes of illegal immigrants and allowing them to stay in America?
You can’t explain it to them because it’s unfair.

The protests around America are sending the wrong message to law abiding people around the world.

Doesn’t America have the right to set it’s own immigration policy? Of course it does and it should. No one else is going to protect America.

Why are the Democrats supporting legislation that would forgive illegal immigrants? The easy answer is votes. The more complex answer has to do with the policies of Democrats. Democrats hide behind diversity and minority rights. What they’re really supporting is criminal activity.

This is similar for the Democrats support of the ACLU who defends groups like NAMBLA (North American Boy Love Association) which advocates for men to have love relationships with young boys.

I don’t think we should take Democrats seriously. They are an immoral party that is now supporting the criminal activity of illegal immigration into this country.

I do have a solution to the problem. It was a solution that a good friend proposed to me and one that I agree with. My friend is actually a Democrat. His proposal is to make North America a truly free zone like Europe.
In Europe, citizens of member countries are free to work in any member country.

We should make America, Canada and Mexico a free zone where citizens of these countries can freely work in any one of these three countries.

In the meantime law enforcement should use all means possible to prevent illegal immigration into this free land. We must not tolerate this illegal activity any longer.
