Does Your House Pass the “Smell Test?”

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

When potential buyers come to look at your house, they’re not only LOOKING, but they’re also SNIFFING, either consciously or unconsciously. When we live in a house, we tend to get used to the way it smells and don’t always notice when something is a little…stinky. But any obnoxious odors will be immediately apparent to a first-time visitor. So before you show your house, take a sniff or two, and then take these steps to de-odorize.

1. Pets. Dirty litter boxes and old “accident” stains are the obvious culprits here. Keep Kitty’s litter box scrupulously clean at all times, and consider having your carpet professionally cleaned by someone who is experienced with pet stains. Don’t forget that many people are allergic to cats, so make sure your furniture and carpet are vacuumed frequently. If possible, think about keeping your cat or other pets confined to a certain area of the house while your house is listed. If you’re thinking of getting a cat or other pet, wait until AFTER you’ve moved.

2. Cooking. We’ve all been told that we should eat more fish, but until your house sells, eat that fish at a restaurant. Strong odors from cooking fish hang around and permeate the house. Cabbage, onions and garlic are notorious offenders, too. Throwing a few lemon slices in some boiling water or running lemon peel through the garbage disposal can help clear the air. And remember to take out your kitchen garbage as often as possible.

3. Cigarettes. Smoking easily drops the value of a house by 30% or more. Smoke gets into the drywall, carpets, furniture, and drapes, and it is very difficult to remove. If you or a family member smokes, stop smoking inside the house as soon as you decide to sell. Paint the interior, and either shampoo the rugs or replace them. If weather permits, keep the windows open to help air out the house.

Follow the above steps, and your home will not only LOOK good, it will SMELL good. A fresh-smelling, odor-free house is much more appealing than a stinky one, and much more likely to sell at the price you want.

End Your Classroom Management Nightmare: How to Manage Unmanageable Students

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

There are three types of kids who may be at the highest
risk of extreme violence. Obviously, you must take
seriously any threat or indication of danger from any
kid, so if a dangerous child you know doesn’t fit one of
these categories, please don’t just breathe a sigh of
relief. Rather, the point of emphasizing these three
top-risk youth, is to have you apportion your time
wisely. You can’t monitor each child equally. This
information may guide you on who you monitor most closely,
especially in the absence of other events or information to
guide you.

In this space, we will have time to cover only one of
these youth in any kind of detail. We will cover the
second two kids in a subsequent article. But, we
understand you may want to know all that right now,
so if you want to learn more immediately
about any of these three youth, go to our web site to
http://www.youthchg.com/hottopic.html and read a
reprint of the full article that this text is
excerpted from.

The youth at highest risk of extreme violence may be
the conduct disordered child. If you don’t already know
this term, visualize the fictional character, J.R. from
the TV show “Dallas” because the hallmark of being a
conduct disorder (c.d.), is having no heart, no conscience,
no remorse. Only a mental health professional can diagnose
a conduct disorder for sure, but being aware that you may
have a conduct disordered child in your class or group,
is important to ensuring your safety, along with the
safety of your kids, because you work with conduct
disorders completely differently than other kids. Since the
c.d. child has little relationship capacity, you should
not use relationship-based approaches with a diagnosed
conduct disorder.

It would be insensitive to call a conduct disorder a
“baby sociopath,” but that is close to what the term
means. It means that the child acts in ways that appear
to be seriously anti-social, and the concern is that the
child may grow up to be a sociopathic type of person. Since
this child cares only about himself (c.d.’s are
predominately male), there are little brakes on this
child from serious or extreme violence. Not every conduct
disordered child will engage in horrific behavior. There is
a range of misbehavior c.d.’s may get involved with,
ranging from lying to setting fires or being a sexual
predator. At the most serious end of the spectrum, lies
the possibility of extreme violence, such as a school
shooting.

Note that this introductory article is just a starting point to
managing conduct disorders and unmanageable students.
This intro will not be adequate to give you more than
a start. Check out these initial guidelines below:

METHODS FOR CONDUCT DISORDERED YOUTH

There’s not space for all the critical do’s and don’t’s
that you must know but here are some of the most
important:

DO’S:

*The main point we give in our classes is that these
children operate on a cost-benefit system, and that to
control your c.d. kids, you must keep the costs high,
and benefits low.

*These children also especially need to pro-actively
learn how to manage their fists, mouth, and actions.

*Your goal is to teach them that when they hurt others,
it often hurts them too. All interventions must be in
the context of “I-Me,” because that is all this kid is
capable of caring about.

DON’T'S:

There are so many of them, it is hard to know where to
start because so many of the techniques you use with
other kids fall apart with this kid. Here are some of
the most critical don’t and do’s when you work with a
diagnosed– that’s the important word here– conduct
disorder. Without the diagnosis, use these guides
especially carefully.

*Don’t: have a heart-to-heart relationship.

*Don’t work on building trust.

*Don’t put an emphasis on compassion, caring, empathy,
values, morals.

*Don’t expect compassionate behavior.

*Don’t trust.

*Don’t give second chances.

*Don’t believe they care or feel remorse.

Hopefully this brief guide to the hardest-to-manage, most
potentially dangerous kid will help you avoid using
everyday interventions that will be unproductive, even
dangerous. Hopefully this information will steer you
towards relying on non-relationship-based interventions
that emphasize learning skills like anger control, managing
the fist, etc. along with firm rules, boundaries and
limits. Be sure to visit our web site

additional information.

The Nokia N81 has proven popular since its launch in September 2007. Like other similarly priced models from Nokia the design is quite contemporary and would appeal to a broad range of users. The N81 is an entry level handset and, compared alongside some of the more popular models at this price it is well featured.

It can be very time consuming trying to identify the very best deal on a Nokia N81, after all there are numerous mobile phone sites and mobile networks to choose from. Have a go at using a comparison site for mobile deals to get great mobile phone deals .

    Networking: Breaking into the Buzz

    Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Breaking into conversational groups is one of the things people ask me about when I’m conducting networking sessions. There’s a buzz that hovers over a crowded room that comes from all those people conversing. You need to break into that buzz to be a great networker.

Let’s face it, looking at a room full of people you don’t know can be intimidating. At
first glance, it appears everyone knows everyone else except you! The first thing
you need to remember is that this is not true. The only difference between you and
all those others is that they have been in the room five minutes longer than you
have. They have had an opportunity to begin a conversation with at least one
person, so they appear at ease. All you have to do is find one person to speak with,
and you will be just as at home.

Ah, but that’s the problem. How do you break into the buzz? Here are a couple of
    ideas.

First, find the refreshment table or the bar, depending on the time of day the event
is being held. Now you are going to make your way over there, but don’t make a
mad dash with your eye firmly locked on the coffee pot. Instead, walk over in a
leisurely way, looking over the people as you go. You may notice someone you
know, or someone you have been wanting to meet. If you note where they are
standing, you can move in that direction once you have your coffee.

A common mistake of neophyte networkers is to concentrate on picking up food
and drink, ignoring the other networkers in the line. Don’t do that, as they
represent your first opportunity to make a connection. You can make casual
conversation about the food, or even just introduce yourself. In either case, by the
time you both reach the end of the line you will have someone to converse with as
you move off into the room.

When you find yourself alone in a crowded room, practise the art of “hovering”.
Move towards a small group of people who are having a conversation, but rather
than push right into the group, “hover” a yard or so outside the circle. Someone will
invariably notice you and invite you in. If someone happens to be speaking at the
time, say something like, “Don’t let me interrupt your story it’s interesting.”
When they finish, that’s the time to introduce yourself to the rest of the group.

If you use these ideas, you’ll find it’s not so hard to become part of that happy,
    noisy crowd.

Couples Baby Shower Honors Both Mom and Dad

    Saturday, August 30th, 2008

If having a Couples Baby Shower seems odd to you, consider this: Mom-to-be did not get pregnant on her own. Nor will she likely be raising the baby on her own. So why should she get to celebrate on her own?

Dad-to-be plays a very big role in the new baby’s life so he should be a part of the
baby festivities as well. A couples baby shower (also referred to as coed baby showers) doesn’t just include dad-to-be in the honors. It also includes all of the other important men in the new baby’s life.

Grandfathers, uncles, cousins, and even godfathers will be able to join in a couples baby shower as well. Baby showers normally consist of cutesy decorations and silly games. But when you are having a couples baby shower, you will probably want to make a few adjustments. You still want to have baby decorations since it is a celebration of a baby at your couples baby shower. But you might want to refrain from using frilly decorations and lean more towards fun ones.

Cutting out the baby shower games may be a good idea for coed baby showers. Instead, give the male guests some screwdrivers and hammers. Then have them put together gifts such as toys and swings while mom and dad-to-be open the presents together.

If this sounds a little too stereotypical for you (me man, you woman, grunt, grunt). Then try playing baby shower games that both the men and women will enjoy at your couples baby shower. Have a contest to see who can drink a beer (or other carbonated beverage) out of a baby bottle the fastest.

Set up a large grid ahead of time with the dates of the month when baby is due. You can have guests write their name on the
date when they think the baby will be born. The host or hostess can be responsible for sending a prize to the winner after the baby comes.

Another good idea for baby shower games for a couples baby shower is Pictionary. Make cards ahead of time with all sorts of baby items on them. Then use them for your home version of the popular game. Surely most of your baby shower guests will be able to draw “rattle”.

But what about “messy diaper” or “nursing”? Prizes for baby shower games can be anything you can think of, but if you are going to spend money on them, you should try to have
something your guests will want to use. Baby shower favors should also be something your guests will use as well as being gender neutral. Some baby shower favor ideas include personalized lollipops or candy tins, baby themed cookies, or the ever popular bubble gum cigars.

If you do not know the sex of the baby yet you can purchase baby shower favors in both pink and blue. Then guests choose the color based on what they think the sex of the baby will be. It might be fun to do a tally at the end of the baby shower just to see how many of the guests think it will be a boy and how many think it will be a girl!

Food is also an important part of a couples baby shower. Though appetizers and finger sandwiches may be appropriate for a regular
shower you may want some heartier fare for the couples baby shower. By adding more substantial items to your menu you will
be catering (so to speak) to your male guests’ larger appetites.

One suggestion for a nice keepsake for mom and dad-to-be. Videotape wishes and tips for them. Ask willing guests to record a short greeting for the new parents (keeping it proper so Junior can watch it in years to come).

Also, don’t forget to send the couples baby shower invitations.

    Basic Facts about Prescription Eyeglasses

    Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Persons, who have the following vision problems such as astigmatism, myopia, or farsightedness, need prescription eyeglasses. Although it may sound like common sense, sometimes it’s not that easy to spot who needs prescription eyeglasses.

Here’s a short but telling list of mannerisms you could be subconsciously doing. Any combinations of these are signs that you need to have your eyes examined.

    • If you find yourself consistently sitting too close to, the television set to see clearly.

    • If you hold a book too close that it’s almost touching your nose.

    • If you use a finger to follow along while reading.

    • If you squint when you look into the distance.

    • If you tend to tilt your head to see better.

    • If you frequently rub your eyes.

    • If you notice, you’ve become more sensitive to light.

    • If you find that, your eyes are constantly tearing.

    • If you close one eye in order to read, watch TV or see objects better.

If you see yourself, or any member of your family exhibit a combination of these mannerisms, have your eye check up with a licensed optometrist.

Don’t fall into the temptation of self prescribing or picking discount eyeglasses. You’ll end up damaging your eyes. That said, as you get older, you should have regular or annual eye exams. This will stop any early eye condition from worsening. Don’t think a one kind of prescription eyeglasses works for all kinds of eyes. You’ll get headaches, and make the problem permanent.

Ok, now you’ve got your eye condition properly diagnosed. You’re ready to pick your very own pair of prescription eyeglasses, what are the tips to remember? Should the frame be fashionable or frugal?

Well, if you are buying only one pair of prescription eyeglasses, it’s better to pick a classical pair.

Ask that your lenses be scratch resistant.

If your are buying for your child, whose prescription changes often, just keep changing the lenses so the prescription warrant this rather than to keep changing the frame.

You can resort to buying cheap frames, but you can not compromise on the quality of the lenses. If you need prescription eyeglasses, it’s always wise to go to a licensed optometrist. Protect your these two most precious resources.

Western and Rustic Lighting: 3 Great Fixture Choices!

    Saturday, August 30th, 2008

The spirit of the Wild West lives on in rustic inspired Western lighting. Light fixtures come adorned with pinecones, antlers and bears, as well as wildlife: trout, deer, elk, and buffalo. For the sportsman or woman, inspirational themed lamps decorated with croquet, snowshoes, bow and arrow, fishing reel, and boat paddles can enhance the décor of a country cabin, farmhouse, or home in the mountains. For a step back to frontier days, wagon wheel chandeliers and tin punched lighting offer unique turn of the century decoration. To get you going on your Western lighting décor consider these three fixture options:

    Bear lamps and chandeliers

Generally speaking, these lamps, sconces and chandeliers capture a bear scene: you will find bears and cubs climbing trees or walking among pine trees. Capturing the spirit, bear figures tend to be either 3 dimensional; or one dimensional, decorating the lamp’s shade, base, or both. Look for sconces, vanities and chandeliers with decorative bear scenes cut out of metal. These art fixtures are wonderful and tend to include soft rust finishes and amber mica shades. Bear lamps often include shades made from faux leather.

    Wagon wheel chandeliers

These fixtures tend to be made as either authentic or reproduction chandeliers. The difference is obvious: the materials. Authentic wagon wheel chandeliers (up light or down light models) will be made from true antique wagon wheels, whereas reproductions are typically made from a lightweight durable material such as medium density polyethylene. Reproductions (up light or down light models) should come with all the necessary parts: chain, globe or hurricane lights, and light fixture. So what’s the difference? Price! An authentic wagon wheel chandelier will certainly cost you more: could be as much as 4 times the cost of a reproduction. However, with an authentic fixture you gain a true haunt from the past and a great conversation piece.

    Antler lighting

Similar to the wagon wheel chandelier above, an antler light fixtures can be purchased as reproduction or authentic. Absolutely no harm is caused to a deer or elk in the creation of an antler lamp or chandelier. Antlers are typically collected on the deer trails where annual antler shedding occurs. If you are choosing an authentic antler fixture expect to spend considerably more than for a reproduction. (Each fixture is unique and handcrafted). Reproduction antler fixtures are made from molds of actual antlers. These pieces tend to be more lightweight (an advantage in many homes).

How to save while you shop online?

    Saturday, August 30th, 2008

When you are shopping online, there are several ways to save some of your money. It is also a great resource to find something that is not available in your local stores.

    Things to be considered
    1. You need to compare the prices of different products before purchasing an item. You are also free to read reviews and visit manufactures website to know the details of the products you are going to buy. While you make a price comparison you should add up all the costs such as shipping, restocking fees, taxes and other extras involved.

    2. Many of the electronic stores websites are adopting a policy to match the competitors advertised price on any product you buy which they usually do up to two weeks after you make a purchase. You should check if any such courtesy is offered by these stores and if so you need to follow their policy correctly and keep the advertisement copy and model number of the product that you find is less somewhere else.

    3. There is a growing rate of online stores offering online discounts and deals to their customers. This is because it involves less cost for the retailers to pay online as compared to local stores. Competition here is also at the click of the mouse that results in aggressive marketing strategy and promotions. This is all beneficial for the online shopper who gets added savings.

    4. You can save your time and money while you purchase any item online. When you ship a nice gift to your holiday it could be very expensive but when you buy it online you can avail free shipping of the product or you could also get some gift card that will help you to save some of your money.

    5. While you go for shopping in a local store, you need to have the discount coupon with you in hand already printed by you. You can get these discount coupons from magazines, entertainment book coupon, newspapers etc. In case, you are shopping online there is no such need as you are asked to enter the coupon code.

    The Beauty of XM

    Friday, August 29th, 2008

What a huge idea! To have the ability to listen to commercial free music, wherever, whenever! One great idea can change everything. XM Satellite Radio has changed everything. XM is now America’s #1 Satellite Radio provider. It features over 160 digital channels over 30 channels of news, sports, talk and entertainment, over 20 dedicated channels of XM-brand Instant Traffic & Weather, and the largest playlist in the industry with access to over 2 million song titles.

Probably the best thing about an XM Satellite radio is that you don’t have to replace your old radio to get XM. It’s swift and simple to add XM to your existing car or home stereo. With the XM system, you’ll still be able to listen to your regular AM, FM stations and your CD or cassette player. A great feature of XM radios is its ability to display the channel name, artist name and song title, so you won’t ever have to ask “what’s the name of that song?” That’s priceless!
If you’re in the market for a new car, be sure to ask about having a XM Radio installed. XM-equipped audio systems are offered in over 100 new cars for the 2005 model year.

There is no doubt that satellite radio is the future of the music and audio entertainment industry. Satellite radio is doing to radio what cable television did to television years ago. An explosion of information is ready for your ears! Founded in 1992, as the American Mobile Radio Corporation, XM offers receivers from the price range of $30 – $300. For the budget-friendly consumer, XM also offers these receivers at a month-to-month plan, with service fees at about $12.95 for the first receiver. Subscribers may purchase packages from 1-5 years, in which the average cost is under $10 per month. XM also offers internet only packages and mobile (i.e. Ipod) services for satellite radio.

For those you curious to how they “do it”, here’s a synopsis. XM provides digital programming directly from three satellites in geostationary orbit above the equator. There are the XM-1 (“Roll”), XM-2 (“Rock”) and XM-3 (“Rhythm”). The integration of three satellites and a ground-based repeater network is designed to give gap-free coverage anywhere within the continental United States. Unfortunately, XM-1, and XM-2 were created with a design fault
on the Boeing 702 series of satellites, which basically means that their life spans will be only about six years, instead of 15 like the maker intended.

The Benefits of Using Conference Calling for the Psychotherapist

    Friday, August 29th, 2008

Conference calling can save you time and money. For those who
are psychotherapists, time is extremely important. Not only do
you need the time to talk to your patience, but you need to
confer with other doctors as well. Conference calling can do
many things for you. You can find these benefits to make your
job simpler, allowing you more time to make it profitable and
beneficial to the patients. All the way around, conference
calling is a great product to have. Here are some of its
    benefits to the psychotherapist.

First of all, conference calling can lock you into a
conversation with many people. This means that you can plug in
several associates or even a group of patients for a group
session. Assuming that you use it in this way, you are saving
yourself quite a bit of time and expense, but you are also
getting a one on one experience to all of those individuals
    included.

Consider the cost savings. If you need to have even just one
secretary sitting into a meeting, you are paying too much. With
conference calling, you save money because you can have the call
    recorded.

If you need to use group therapy with your patients, consider
using conference calling. Of course, many individuals will
prefer that they can listen into a conversation and not have to
have others see who they actually are. This can help people to
open up, to divulge what they need to and to begin to heal with
your direction. Because everyone has the ability to communicate
with everyone else, they may just feel more comfortable doing so
without having to face the person directly.

    Using Conference Calling

Using conference calling in your profession can be quite easy.
You can talk to a group of people from the same area, from the
same state or even across the world. This makes it easy to get a
group of doctors together to talk about an issue. It helps to
bring together people from across the country for the same cause.
And, it is time and money saving to you by cutting your costs
    considerably.

Are you concerned that it will be too expensive? Concerned with
it being too hard to use? If so, you do not need to worry. All
the individual calling into the call will need to do is call a
specific number and enter a code that you provide to them. It is
that easy. They can then talk to you, talk to others on the call
or simply listen. Virtually anyone from around the world can be
included. Lastly, conference calling for the psychotherapist is
quite affordably priced. For even those on a limited budget, it
can be easy to afford. It is much less expensive than having to
travel from place to place or paying fees for a meeting room.
Conference calling is a great tool for any psychotherapist to use
    in their daily practice!

Tom Parker has put together a website to help people who want to
have a conference call and made it affordable for everyone!
