Christmas – The Broken Tradition That Left Families Smiling

Friday, January 30th, 2009

The jolly festive season is upon us once again, Christmas a time for happiness/ turkey/mulled wine and crackers. These are just some of the traditions that are upheld at this time of year by people who on Christmas day celebrate the birth of our Lord.
Following this big day we then have the task of putting into force our new year’s resolutions just so we can break them, just another tradition where vows and promises are made.
Traditions are there for the benefit of remembrance, you have the person that abides by the
rules and then you have others that intend to do things a little different.
Whoever or whatever sort of person you are tradition is tradition.

By replacing turkey with a plate of pig’s trotters on the Christmas menu is another Christmas tradition broken. Remember to be extra careful who you invite on the day for dinner if porky’s feet are dish of the day.

A Christmas idea

A fantastic way to keep family togetherness for ever for generations to come when bearing gifts to loved ones is to give each member an identical piece of jewellery symbolizing unity. It is a fabulous way of bonding and proving to the world that blood is thicker than water

Let us go back in time where Scottish tartan denoted the clan you belonged too. Cherokee indians/apaches etc expressed their tribal identities by headwear or other colourful symbols. So why not bring your tribe/clan together with there own identities in the form of a piece of gold or silver.

Make your new year’s resolution today and go in search of the symbol that will be recognized and passed down to future generations, by doing this another tradition is broken, but if it brings happiness, what the heck.

Unison prevails in the form of your own jewellery trade mark where your chosen symbol ring/chain sends a message to the world that this family would proudly like to say, united we stand.

Jewellery gifts can be made extra special by designing your own. Jewellers can take your ideas and work miracles with them as in putting you and your family on the map with your own trademark. Be sure to check out this amazing site www.blingblingjewelrystore.com.

Ho ho ho
Merry Christmas

Be sure to visit this fabulous site with trinkets galore. I think you will be amazed when you enter Aladdins cave as I would describe it. www.blingblingjewelrystore.com

Using Wood Molding In Your Home

Friday, January 30th, 2009

One of the most versatile items to consider in your interior design effort is wood molding. Not only are there tons of uses for it but there are literally hundreds of different types of molding.

Adding it to your decor also increases the perceived value of the home. Why? Because molding is something that was added purely for esthetics and not as a necessity. Savvy real estate agents know that when a potential buyer spots molding in the home the usually exhibit positive buy signs.

Wood molding can be used in many different ways.

Door trim. Set your home apart by deviating from plain old mitered edges. Adding blocks to the corners will give a pleasing, upscale look to an otherwise plain jane doorway. And, instead of a single door trim, try adding an additional decorative molding for another look.

Baseboards need to be sturdy. The entire reason for having baseboards is to protect the wall. There are different synthetic materials you can get such as vinyl but nothing takes the place of solid wood.

A base shoe molding added to the baseboard provides additional transitioning from the flooring material to the baseboard.

Try dressing up your window casings. Just like doors, windows are usually finished off with a single plain trim and mitered edges. Try adding blocks and trim to match the doorways and you’re sure to please the eye.

Is your dining room or kitchen eating area a bit on the cramped side? If so, think about installing a chair rail. Just as the name implies, chair rails are designed to prevent damage to the walls. If the room for your table and chairs is somewhat cramped, sliding the chair back to get up from the table can create unsightly nicks, dents, scratches and sometimes even knock out the drywall. Installing a chair rail at the height of the backs of your chairs will provide a “stop” that prevents damage to the wall. Chair rail material is easily spruced up with a new coat of paint and is much easier to maintain then repairing and replacing drywall or other expensive finishes.

One of the best uses for wood molding is crown molding. Just as the name implies, crown molding gives a “crown” to your room. Placed at the top of the wall as a transition to the ceiling, wood crown molding is one of the best ways to add value and beauty to any room.

Wood molding can also be used as handrails in your stairwell creating beauty and safety to your stairs.

Another use for wood molding is as a top to wainscoting giving a “finished” look to any wall where you have opted to use wainscoting as a design option.

Another decorating tip is to use plain molding as a “frame” on a wall. The frame can act as a design element by adding a contrasting paint, wallpaper or finish to the area inside of the molding frame. This is a great way display your favorite art or other personal items such as a collection of sorts mounted to a backboard of simple, finished wood.

With just a little imagination you can definitely make the most of molding in your home!

The Hanging Of Jonathan Wild: A Leadership Lesson

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Jonathan Wild, notorious English criminal (1682-1725) picked the pocket of the priest who administered the last rites on the gallows at Tyburn. The unrepentant felon triumphantly waved his trophy, a corkscrew, just before he was dropped to his death.

There is a leadership lesson in this. And it’s a lesson many leaders miss. When you’re leading a group of people of whatever size to get results, understand that roughly about 20 percent of the people will be against you. The 20 percent won’t do or at least won’t want to do what you require and thus may perform poorly on the job.

One of the most persistent and difficult challenges of leadership is dealing with poor performers. Aside from job-related problems they engender, they also squander time and resources. “Forty percent of my time,” a CEO told me, “is devoted to dealing with ten percent of my employees.”

Mind you, I’m not talking about poor performance tied to “skill” issues. People who are not measuring up because they lack skills and knowledge to do well usually need a different intervention than people who have “will” issues.

You might make a rough equivalence between the people performing poorly on the job because of will issues with the Jonathan Wilds of the world. After all, as an upright citizen, Wild was a “poor performer.” But as a pickpocket, he was adroit.

Putting aside the specific kinds of interventions you might undertake, the important thing is your perspective. In dealing with them, you absolutely must not underestimate the skills, talents, and proficiency they bring to poor performance. They can “pick your pocket” and you won’t even know it.

You have three choices when dealing with them. You can choose to live with them as they are. You can choose to rid yourself of them. Or you can choose to intervene to try and change them. There’s no fourth choice.

Or maybe I should say there’s no first choice either. The first “choice” may be no choice at all. You probably can’t leave them alone. Poor performers are usually not content to be one-man-bands. They love company. They need to recruit others onto their poor-performance teams – or at least keep them from joining your team. In this capacity, they’re smart, adaptive, innovative, and good leaders. Your underestimating them gives them an advantage against you.

There are many ways to deal with poor performers. (Articles on my web site detail a few.) The point is that in your dealings, keep in mind you could be up against some Jonathan Wilds, those people who may be performing poorly on the job but who perform excellently in their parallel, and maybe to them more important, job — which is being against you.

21st Century Leadership Empowers Leaders at Every Level

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Historically a new-hire moved from learning the required tasks of their particular job to eventually understanding the goals, strengths, and weaknesses of the business in an orderly way – often having as much to do with their getting older as with their getting better, smarter, or more capable.

They were then promoted from being a productive part of the organization (worker) to supervising others who are on their way up.

Much later, if the politics (of birth, etc.) were right he moved from telling selected people what to do, to the head of the business where he now taught what he knew to the people who were telling the others what to do.

That went on until it was time or past time for him to be let out to pasture.

That was then – “Doing it Right” is now – and the future.

“Doing it Right” is based on the principles of right action, the right people doing the right things in the right way and for the right reasons.

For instance, in 2006 a new-hire may know as much or more about the right way as the old man.

The right way to do things is only the right way if it results in pushing us in the right direction.

The old man has valuable insights the new-hire needs to understand – sooner rather than later – about what really is the right direction. And the people in the middle add value to those below and above them.

Contributions to future success come from all levels of the enterprise – and its not just the boys any more.

The problem in many companies is that everyone has their picture of the right ways, the right, directions, and the right reasons – and they assume their picture is what everyone else is seeing.

A few years ago there was a lot ink dedicated to the revolutionary idea of the “flattened hierarchy” style of management – where bureaucratic organizations were eliminating some if not most of the levels within their organization.

The idea was to get ideas, strategies, etc. from the top to the very bottom in 2-3 steps. This was supposed to enhance communications, efficiencies, innovations, blah blah blah. This was so obvious. What was the big deal?

The vast majority (90%) of all businesses already had that sort of organization in place. And they were not any better at doing things right – just because they did not have the money to have more levels of management.

Today companies are successful not because of their organization charts – but because of an internal attitude that supports the principles of doing it right.

The 21st Century version of the flattened hierarchy is to empower individuals wherever they are in the organization to step outside their defined boxes and contribute.

It is about an atmosphere of learning, doing, and teaching simultaneously by everyone to everyone – for the benefit of everyone.

When the machine operators, supervisors, managers, and owner/operators (you fill in your job descriptions) effortlessly pass information and respect up, down, across, and around the organization – they’ve got it.

If a new-hire thinks they know best about how things should be done – they should be taught why, in terms of the organizations mission – to help them confirm to themselves and others that their idea are valid.

Or to teach them more about the direction we are headed – to make sure their how will actually take them that way.

The old man needs to know what to look for when putting on more new hires and promoting more people into the roles of a successful 21st Century company. The more he knows about what is really going on out there – on the floor, in the community, and the industry – the better choices he can make.

The people in the middle, the supervisors and team leaders, traditionally being pushed from one direction and pulled from the other – need to learn how to effectively turn this pressure into steam that drives the organization.

So, what is my point? Well it is not your dads (granddads) business environment any more. And if that is true – how can everyone contribute as team members, cooperate as team players, to create a winning team?

First: An atmosphere free of traditional labor vs management must be present. In the 21st Century long-term interdependent relationships based on this old model will not survive. There is more external competition than we can stand already, we do not need it inside the organization too.

Second: The people at the top must admit that they do not know everything – and that just because their partner’s daughter is twenty-three and has been there four months – does not mean she doesn’t have excellent/valid input into the way things ought to be.

Third: Everybody else must admit that just because the boss is old (55+) does not mean he “just doesn’t get it” and that he will “never change.” Both groups have so much to offer the team and being able to offer it without fear of criticism is mandatory.

Finally: There should be a structured way of systematically reinforcing the right actions we understand, learning the ones we don’t, and communicating them within the organization. Human nature keeps drawing us back to where we are comfortable – so we need a continual push until the new place is more comfortable than the old.

The introduction and reinforcement of right action strategies is the purpose of “Doing it Right: Realizing Your Company’s Potential.”

It dovetails with existing task oriented training to provide the framework for overall actions.

It provides a context for sponsoring organizations – trade associations for example – to better serve their constituencies by providing a framework around their existing educational programs.

The principles of right actions are vital for you personal and business success “Doing it Right” may offer you the best way to establish and maintain those right actions.

And now, its content is available online at no charge.

Wayne Messick, publisher of Doing It Right http://www.ibizresources.com/doright.htm – decided to help 500,000 business owners integrate 21st Century leadership strategies by putting the book’s interactive content on their web site where its content is available at no charge and let the search engines and word of mouth do the rest.

How to Make Your Site Earn with Adsense

Monday, January 26th, 2009

1. Pick a theme you want to use for getting adsense traffic

2. Get a descriptive domain name that matches that theme such as:

www.affiliatemarketing.com – no doubt that one’s gone, but you get the idea.

3. Fill your site with content that repeatedly supports the domain name

- 7 easy steps to affiliate marketing profits

– affiliate marketing 101

– affiliate marketing for the computer illiterate

– how I started with affiliate marketing

You’ll need loads of articles – if you don’t want to write them, scout around free content sites such as www.ezinearticles.com and use the articles provided by other authors. Be sure to play by the rules and include their resource box and links though.

4. Keep focused and keep positive

it can take time (a lot) and effort (a lot)

5. Get support

Join a forum or two and hang out with the experts, to keep you motivated and save you making unnecessary mistakes

6. Take out an adsense ad!

Ever looked at the ads in the column to the right of Googles search pages? Many of them are pay per click ads that go directly to an adsense site. The idea being that once you are there, you’ll click some ads and earn them some money.

Some of those sites are poor though and some people are so irked by them that they’ll click in and out repeatedly and run them up a nice pay per click bill! So again, content is key. Using pay per click ads to drive traffic to your adsense site is fine – just make sure there is some good content on the site, not just a pile of ads.

IT Consulting for Micro Businesses: What You Need to Know

Monday, January 26th, 2009

IT consulting for micro businesses is a good starting point for many IT professionals. In addition to the general hardware and software, and peer-to peer networking, you’ll need to be familiar with some additional items. In this article, you’ll learn what other skills you need for micro business IT consulting.

When providing IT consulting to micro small businesses, you will occasionally get requests for support of the big competitors of the basic Windows software for their competiton. Some of these include Goldmine and other kinds of tech management or Peachtree – another accounting package.

Virus protection is also real important, so make sure you are comfortable with McAfee and Norton. Make sure you are comfortable with personal firewalls like Zone Alarm, and Norton personal firewall as well as remote control packages like PC anywhere.

Micro Small Business Networking Needs

You need to be comfortable with working and setting up basic peer to peer LANs to share a drive, to share a CD-ROM, to share a printer, to share internet access, and share ICS kind of stuff. You should be pretty comfortable with the inexpensive routers that share a broadband connection among a whole office and have the little built in 10/100 switch and you can scale it up there.

With IT consulting, you should also have some familiarity with some Y-5 products, the wireless products that allow you to do some limited amounts of wireless access, especially the entry level ones you find in a lot of office supply superstores and warehouse clubs.

The Bottom Line about IT Consulting

Do you need to know all of these to provide IT consulting micro small businesses? Preferably you should know half or more. So in other words there are like 13-14 things on the list, so if you know 4 or 5 of them you are kind of ok, you should ideally know half of them or more.

Mazda RX8 Horsepower Controversy

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Since its launch, the Mazda RX8 has been the subject of close scrutiny by enthusiasts. The high level of attention is not only due to the car’s admirable driving dynamics but, in part to the early reports of below-than-expected performance. To be more specific: wheel horsepower measured on several chassis dynamometer runs resulted in values well below the expected 17%~20% drivetrain parasitic losses. And quarter mile runs of anywhere between 0.5 and 1.5 seconds off of those produced by magazines on allegedly pre-production vehicles.

In connection with the RX8’s horsepower rating: the original marketing material from Mazda North America (MNAO) advertised the 6 speed manual transmission RX8 at 247hp @ 8,500rpm. Assuming parasitic drivetrain loses between 17%-20% -common for modern rear wheel drive vehicles, a stock RX8 should measure between 205~197 horsepower at the rear wheels (rwhp) -depending on elevation, barometric pressure, temperature and correction factors applied. Instead, a stock RX8 chassis dyno run shows results ranging anywhere from mid-high ~160 to ~185rwhp. Such readings would represent parasitic drivetrain loses in excess of 25%. To say that, it is unacceptable to experience such a high level of loss through the drivetrain of a “sports car” with a carbon fiber drive shaft -amongst other things- is an understatement.

To further consolidate doubts about the actual power output of the new Renesis, several owners were unable to reproduce mid-low 14 second quarter mile passes -as seen published by well known U.S. car magazines. Low trap speeds were another hint towards the apparent lack of power output.

Shortly after, several debates on online enthusiast forums and discussion boards turned into heated arguments as to what was causing such poor “straight line performance.” Many former Miata owners remembered a previous “snafu” in Mazda’s history, when the manufacturer admittedly overstated the horsepower figures of their redesigned Mazda Miata.

After a few months, MNAO came forward and explained that they had misrepresented the Renesis’ power output. The revised figure was now 238hp @ 8,500rpm; however, according to MNAO, this revision did not change the previously achieved track performance results.

Speculations about the reasons behind the sudden lack of power output were many. However, there are currently two schools of thought:

  • The first one supports the idea that the RX-8’s engine management unit (ECU), in conjunction with the many “nanny” devices -such as ABS & TCS- do not allow to obtain accurate readings from a chassis dynamometer. To simplify, when the car is run on a chassis dyno, only the driven wheels are turning. The RX-8’s ECU would detect an abnormal driving situation and retard timing and apply other safety measures to preserve either the “driver” or the “engine” -or both- from damage (read: skidding situation, or a car going out of the road.)
  • The second one believes that MNAO was forced to re-engineer the software that runs the engine management even before the first batch of RX-8’s reached U.S. shores, due to upcoming Federal emissions regulations. I have read of one in particular, which requires catalytic converter lifespan of ~100,000 miles. The enemy number one of catalytic converters on any vehicle is heat (and heat is the number one attribute of rotary engine’s exhaust gases.)

MNAO offered two options to those who had pre-ordered an RX-8, or had purchased no late than September 2003:

  • They would buy back the vehicle, no questions asked.
  • They would offer FREE Scheduled Maintenance for the life of the warranty, plus a 500 dollar “gift card” to those who opted to keep the car.

I was among those who opted to keep their RX-8. After all, the driving experience had not changed since test driving the vehicle prior to purchasing it. Since August 2003 I have clocked well over 20,000 miles -as of 1/18/2005- and I have but one ounce of regret about my decision. If you’d like to read more about owners’ opinions, visit this thread @ RX8Club.com

There have been a number of ECU “updates” released during the past 2 years. To the best of my knowledge, all early samples of ‘04 RX-8s, came from port with level “J” of engine management software. Since then, we have escalated all the way through the alphabet to “M” -which was released on a TSB campaign by Mazda North America (MSP04) in order to have ALL vehicles taken in for Service @ Authorized Dealers flashed to “M” calibration.

Can Social Websites Be A Safe Place For Teenagers ?

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

A lot of media comment has been generated around the subject of websites aimed at teenagers and safety issues. Many teen sites have emerged in the past few years that are causing significant concerns amongst parents and child advocacy groups as to just how safe are they for teenagers to use.

There have been anecdotal stories of teenage girls being harassed and even assaulted after meeting up with people who had faked their profiles on the most popular teen websites.

Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to prevent some level of criminality in society, otherwise there would be no crime – but measures can be taken to protect vulnerable teenagers from adults who have an inappropriate interest in them.

Some websites have taken to applying stronger levels of protection to their services to ensure that they are safer for teenagers to use – and offer parents and schools security that the environment is as safe as is it possible for an internet based social service.

Some web sites are already taking measures to make their sites as safe as is reasonably possible for teenagers to chat and make friends. Live chatrooms should always be fully moderated by live monitoring staff and changes to profiles or new photos have to be checked for decency and appropriateness.

As more web sites adopt such pro-active policies to keep the teen environment safe, the opportunities for malicious adults to abuse their trust will diminish.

The online teen market is a fast growing opportunity, and it is important that all sites catering to this audience make the environment as safe as possible. Anything less would only lead to greater regulatory action from parents and schools to bar access to these hugely popular sites.

Ian Mansfield is a staff writer for http://www.maddogmobile.com which is a recently launch teen social site that offers the safest enviroment for young adults. All live chatrooms are fully moderated plus new profiles and photos are pre-screened before going live on the website.
