OS Commerce – Helping Out the Little guys

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Executive Summary

eCommerce platforms are being commoditized. Enterprise level solutions are coming down in price and new open source solutions are being made available to anyone with an internet connection for free.

The most robust of these open source solutions is OS Commerce (OSC) – a community driven eCommerce solution that is flexible, scalable, and user friendly. As eCommerce becomes even more a part of mainstream retail, OSC will provide businesses of all shapes and sizes with the functionality and capabilities of the big boys. This brief examines some of the advantages of OS Commerce and provides insights into how it can help your business.

There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Maybe so, but you CAN get an eCommerce platform for nothing. Offered for free at www.oscommerce.com, this eCommerce solution provides tons of bells and whistles and provides a user friendly interface to manage the administrative portions of the store. The code is based in the PHP scripting language and runs on the Apache web server – a user also needs access to a SQL database to initially upload the files that manage the categories and products within the admin section.

Now that sounds complicated, but really anyone can do it with some concentrated effort. Much of the documentation online regarding OS is very thorough and provides step by step plans on how to get your store up and running. Any newbie to this type of work will likely come across some roadblocks, but the OS Commerce community forums are only a click away to start trouble shooting.

The solution is community driven, meaning that like minded OSCers are ready to help out their peers with answers to posted questions. Yes, at times this can be extremely frustrating waiting for an answer, but it is very rewarding to overcome a technology bug on your own.

Contribute to the Cause

The best part of OSC is the number of contributions that can be added to your site at any time. Again, there is no cost for these enhancements and upgrades – just the need to be patient in your installations. In most cases, contributions are located on the OS commerce community section and are downloadable via zip files. After opening the file, read the “read me” file which will walk you through the file additions, subtractions, and code changes needed to make your enhancement work properly. If you explore the OS platform be sure to upgrade with the following contributions.

Ultimate SEO URL’s by Chemo

This cool contribution allows the site owner to create static URL’s out of a database driven site. This will dramatically help in search saturation as more pages are able to be indexed. Its no secret that search spiders like traditional urls better than ones that are dynamic and this contribution helps achieve that.

Easy Populate

No need to input product data manually, this contribution allows you to import data from a basic excel file into your store. A true timesaver!

Featured Products

If you have an ecommerce store – certain products are more attractive to sell than others. This contribution allows you to tailor the featured products that you want to showcase within both your home and category pages.

Final Thoughts on OSC

Myself, I am a marketer. But after learning OS I really feel like I have some programmer blood in me! This platform is easy to use and perfect for a small to medium size business in getting online. Yes, there will be headaches along the way but stay with it and you will overcome them and soon have an ecommerce store to bring you in a new revenue stream.

A Dog Bit Me, Whom Can I Sue?

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Any person, whether a minor or adult, having been bitten or knocked down by an animal improperly or inadequately leashed or contained can sue for injuries or death caused by a bite or knock-down. You can sue the person who has or was responsible for the animal. For a person to be responsible they need not be the owner of the animal. However, an owner who maintains some control over the animal remains liable even if the animal is partly under the care of others.

You may be entitled to recover damages for past and future and medical expenses, past and future wage loss, past and future pain and suffering, and if it is deemed that conduct is severe enough, punitive damages (punishment damages against the defendant). If the victim dies, his or her survivors are entitled to recover full compensation for their financial losses that resulted from the victim’s death, as well as emotional distress damages. If the survivors can prove that the victim lived for a period of time between the negligent act and death, they can also bring an action for punitive damages.

You can also sue if you were fleeing from an animal, and you reasonably feared for your safety and can prove that the owner or possessor of the dog knew or should have known of the dog’s propensity to attack people walking nearby, and failed to act accordingly.

So if you own an animal with a propensity for biting strangers, make sure it is safely contained fenced, chained, boxed, whatever is necessary to protect you, your animal, and potential plaintiffs. If you are bitten by an animal and it creates a situation where a lawsuit is appropriate, be informed as to the criteria under which you can pursue and obtain damages.

Eat Your Way to Beautiful Skin

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Expensive creams, steam bath, careful removal of makeup and a good foundation is well and good. However, this is only partly the way to the flawless skin Hollywood-stars and models display. Beauty and perfect skin come from within, and especially has a lot to do with what you eat. This article tells you how to obtain clear, shining and beautiful skin

Drop white food

Yes, French fries will cause acne, but not because of the large amounts of fat. It is the potatoes that provoke the pimples, a new study reveals. Scientists examined the food habits of 1 200 Paraguayan hunter-gatherers free of acne, and concluded that they eat completely different compared to most people in the Western world. Their diet consisted of protein, fruit and vegetables and was stripped of simple carbohydrates like white bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and similar products – important aspects in our daily fare. The researchers concluded that our propensity for carbohydrates makes the insulin level increase dramatically, which in the last instance causes pimples.

If you want beautiful face skin free of acne, replace all carbohydrates with whole meal bread, -pasta and brown rice – they are decomposed at a slower rate and will not provoke acne inducing insulin intoxication like white bread, normal pasta and rice.

Eat a lot of fish

Fish is rich in essential fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6,. These fatty acids counteract the blocking of pores that cause acne, and in the long term, more wrinkles. Salmon, mackerel and tuna are the species richest in the healthy acids, but if you don’t like fish you can also find them in almond, hazelnuts and flaxseed.

Goodbye blush food

A touch of color on the cheeks is nice, but bright red blushing from top to collar bone is not necessarily desirable. If you have a tendency for blushing, be alert that certain food and drinks may be the cause. This especially applies for spice, salted and smoked meat, taste amplifiers (especially sodium glutamate) and alcohol (especially red wine). This kind of food makes the blood vessels expand, and cause red cheeks and blushing neck and breast. However, everybody reacts differently on food be alert on what makes you turn red.

A lot of olive oil

If you avoid fatty substance to keep the waist slim, your face may be paying the price. A lot of young women experience dry skin that peel of because they don’t get enough fatty substance. If your daily intake is less than 20 gram (approx. two tablespoons of oil) the skin is not able to uphold. Not only will the skin look dry and dead, it will also accelerate wrinkles. Without fat the body cannot absorb vitamin A, which the body needs to counter the ageing process. Therefore: Use avocadoes and nuts in the salad and pour some olive oil on top – it doesn’t hurt!

How to Stop Struggling with your Child about Homework

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

My son entered sixth grade this year, and he’s been very appropriately exploring who he is in relation to the many new freedoms and responsibilities that come with middle school.

It’s new territory for me, too, and it’s not always easy to know what is his business and what is mine as the boundaries change and expand.

After a pretty nasty fight over his choice of breakfast one morning, I realized that what he ate was no longer my business. (Actually, it really never was my business in the first place, but I sometimes forget that).

My business is what kind of food I purchase and make available in our kitchen. His business is to select from those options, or to choose ‘none of the above’ if he feels so inclined, and go to school and spend his allowance at the vending machine.

So after school I apologized for the way the day had started, and told him that I realized I’d been interfering in his business, and that I’d do my best to stay out of it in the future. He looked at me with such tenderness, and said, “It’s okay, Mom. I know it’s hard for you to get out of my business, because after all you’ve been in it my whole life!”

So it’s a constant balancing act, but I thought I was doing pretty well with it. And then I received a rather scathing email from his dad telling me that our son had not been completing his homework assignments in a timely fashion, and asking why he had not done any work on these long term projects while he was at my house.

He requested that I go through his backpack each night and look at all his papers, checking for due dates and then making sure he stayed on schedule.

Although it seemed to be a logical intervention, something about it was disturbing to me. I didn’t want to do it. I hated the idea of taking over something that I thought was well within the realm of self-responsibility for a sixth grader.

My instinct told me to let my son learn from his own experience what happens when homework isn’t completed on time. But I didn’t want to drop the ball, either. I just wasn’t sure where my responsibility as a parent fell in this situation.

Or more accurately, I had been sure until I got that email, and then I looked around and realized that I really didn’t know this territory, and what if I was lost?

Being the sort of person who loves to gather information and input whenever I’m in a quandary, I decided to contact my son’s teachers, feeling fairly confident that they’ve seen things like this before. If they said it would serve him for me to take over managing his homework, then I would do it, no matter how much the idea repulsed me.

Thankfully, they did not. Instead they fully supported my instinct to let him learn by experiencing the consequences of his choices, even if it meant watching his grades slip while he fumbled to grasp the connection.

One teacher even loaned me her personal copy of the Love and Logic tape called Winning the Homework Battle by Foster Cline and Jim Fay. And that’s what restored my confidence in my instincts.

I’d read their book Parenting with Love and Logic many years ago, and loved their assertion that parents should stay out of the choice/consequence feedback loop as much as possible.

The hallmark example of their philosophy in action is letting a child go out into the cold without a proper jacket. There’s a big difference between your child choosing a jacket next time based on her previous experience of shivering vs. wearing a coat because mom said she couldn’t go out without it.

One is an authentic, repeatable, and sustainable inner awareness of choice and consequence, and the other is compliance with an external authority who must then be present for the desired behavior to occur in the future. I don’t know about you, but I plan to be out of the loop someday, so I’d much prefer intrinsic awareness as a motivator for my kids, and the sooner the better!

The tape was such a timely reminderso clear about what was my problem and what was my son’s, and confirmed what I have seen over and over to be true: there are very few things that I can really and truly MAKE my child do.

I can’t MAKE him eat, I can’t MAKE him be nice, and I can’t MAKE him do his homework. So what can I do?
I can put nourishing food on the table, and share my enjoyment while eating it. I can be nice to him, and to others in front of him, and hope he decides that it feels good and he’d like to be that way, too.

And I can clear off the table after dinner, light a candle, sharpen the pencils, and sit down to balance my checkbook or write a letter during family study time, and invite him to take that opportunity to complete his homework.

The rest is up to him.

The tape was chock full of gems, some of which brought me to tears. Cline and Fay relate several personal stories from their experiences as parents, as well as their own childhoods. A particularly relevant story was shared by Foster Cline, who had a learning disability as a child (back in the days before special ed) and regularly brought home report cards filled with D’s and F’s.

His father would ask him every time if he was proud of his report card, and he would say ‘no, sir.’ To which his father would reply ‘Good! I’m glad to hear that!’ and then sign off on it. There would be no further discussion.

In about 9th grade he grew out of his disability, and went on to become an MD who is very highly regarded today for his extensive knowledge about parenting, among other things. He attributes his success to confidence in himself and his abilities, which was never shaken by his parents, who made a very conscious and deliberate choice to celebrate his strengths and overlook his areas of ‘weakness’.

Cline and Fay refer to studies which conclude that grades simply do not correlate to success in adult life as measured by financial standards or intellectual contributions made to society. What does correlate is how well the individual knows and draws upon their areas of competence, and how capable they feel themselves to be.

Which brings me back to homework. If I rummage through my son’s backpack and then sit down and monitor the completion of his homework, what message am I sending to him? Maybe that I don’t think he’s capable of taking care of this part of his life.

And that is not a message that I want to deliver. So instead, with the help of this tape, I’m hanging back. I’m telling him that I’m aware that he’s having a problem with homework, but that I know he can come up with a solution, and to let me know if there’s any way I can be helpful.

One of my favorite stories on the tape took place when one of their sons decided to test out his freedom to do some, all, or none of his homework. For 13 days in a row, he chose to do none of it. At that point his father said, “So son, it looks like you’ve chosen not to do any of your homework. Is that correct?” And his son grinned and said “Yep, that’s right.”

To which his father replied (using a tried and true Love and Logic phrase), “No problem! I checked with the folks up at the school, and they assured me that they offer 5th grade every year. So anything that you miss from not doing homework this year, you can just pick up by repeating 5th grade next year!” and walked away.

And what do you know, very soon after that, his son of his own accord decided he’d do some homework. And although he did just enough to get by, he did not need to experience 5th twice.

There’s so much on this tape, and the other materials available at www.loveandlogic.com, that rather than go on and on about it I’d just like to highly recommend all of their work. They’ve done a terrific job, so there’s no need for me to reinvent the wheel.

I realize that this is potentially a very controversial approach to parenting. All I can tell you is that I’ve seen it work better than anything else in my own family. So maybe, if like me you feel frustrated and overwhelmed with the old model of parenting, and you are looking for another way, you might want to check it out.

A Classic Toy For The Ages

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Throughout the years the toy market has seen many toys come and go but few have the staying power and the unique history of the Teddy Bear. Let’s explore this unique story of this classic toy and a piece of American heritage.

It was November 1902 and our president at the time, Theodore Roosevelt went on a hunting excursion to Mississippi. The trip was business and pleasure: He was there to try to settle a boundary dispute between Mississippi and Louisiana and a hunting excursion for the president, who loved the sport.

But on that particular day, the hunt did not go as planned as President Roosevelt could not find a suitable target to his liking. However, his staff, in an effort to accommodate him, somehow managed to capture a Louisiana black bear cub for him to shoot and tied it to a tree. The thought of shooting a baby bear tied to a tree did not seem sporting to the accomplished outdoorsman and he refused, instead sparing the life of the black bear cub and setting it free.

Mr. Clifford Berryman, a famous political cartoonist for the Washington Star at the time, drew a cartoon titled, “Drawing The Line In Mississippi”, depicting the President letting the bear live, and using the story as a metaphor as for how the president dealt with the boundary dispute.

The cartoon also showed the President with his rifle and his back turned on the cute, cowering, baby bear. This gave Brooklyn toy store owner, Morris Michtom the inspiration for a display for his shop.

He placed a copy of the newspaper cartoon next to a hand-sewn stuffed bear his wife made in the window of his store. To his surprise, he was inundated with customers eager to buy his stuffed bear!

Michtom quickly requested and received President Theodore Roosevelt’s permission to use his name for the stuffed bears that he and his wife were now selling. Thus the “teddy bear” was born, and soon Michtom was producing the bears by the thousands. With the profits from the sales of the teddy bears Michtom went on to form the Ideal Toy Company.

Teddy bears continue to be best friends to children of all ages all over the world. Their mass appeal will never go out of style and they are a true classic to, albeit, with a little presidential help.

Teen Pregnancy Ruins

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

One of the biggest problems the teenagers of today face is unplanned pregnancy. The united States has one of the highest pregnancy rates in the world. Close to 1 million teenagers become pregnant each year. Approximately 90% of the pregnancies is unplanned, a number of them which eventually leads to abortion.

Consequences of teenage pregnancy

Unplanned pregnancy poses one of the most devastating problems in life. There is just too much stress to deal with for a teenage mom. The stress that they’re dealing with are time, financial and duties. Imagine the difficulty in juggling the time spent in school, with the baby and earning money just to provide necessities for the baby. Even if a teenage mom decides to forgone of her duties, for example quit school, it does not necessarily makes the situation or the future any better. With insufficient education means that the teenage mom will have to settle for low-paying jobs or worse, being unemployed.

Prevention of teenage pregnancy

I believe one of the most effective prevention measures is by promoting abstinence. Parents should try instilling moral or religious values in their kids. It will prove to be the best prevention, rather than encouraging safe sex with the use of condoms etc.

Proper guidance of teens does not start tomorrow, but today. It’s easy for them to ruin their futures by making a simple mistake and it’s our responsibility as parents, teachers, the society etc to guide them to the right path.

Growing Bonsai Trees

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

The essentials.

The first thing you should decide when considering growing Bonsai Trees is what type of tree you want to grow. The type of tree you want will determine not only the tree you should buy but also the design of pot and the types of tools you may require, and of course you should have the knowledge of growing the particular type of Bonsai tree that you want. Not all Bonsai trees demand the same attention. For instance draping trees will need very different pruning to a conifer and so you should have the knowledge to grow exactly what type of tree you want.

After this, it’s time to prepare yourself; you will need the appropriate tools and one good pot at the very least.

Tools.

The tools you will need include various sizes of wire and wire cutters, a small and large pair of scissors, a small pair of sharp garden shears and larger pair of pruners to cut through the thick branches.

Bonsai or not Bonsai?

Many places now sell Bonsai that are ready trained and have grown into healthy but juvenile Bonsai. As long as you are careful to pick a healthy and good looking tree then care, attention and an eye for detail means you will be able to buy a partially grown Bonsai and help it grow into a perfect full blown Bonsai. However, should you decide to buy a full grown tree or plant, then it is a good idea to visit the nurseries that stock trained Bonsai. This way you can get an idea for what type of tree you want and how they should look. It can be very difficult to see past the shape the tree already has, but remember when you want to train a tree to become your Bonsai project you will be cutting most of the branches and foliage away so it will look very dissimilar to how you first see it. You need to have good vision for this method.

Planting.

You can buy a Bonsai pot from virtually any plant shop, but make sure it has adequate drainage and preferably has little feet on it to allow the water to drain away and also allow a good level of airflow. Using a soil consisting of half organic matter and half grit will allow a good level of drainage while still giving the plant the anchorage it will need in it’s shallow pot.

Now cover the drainage holes in the bottom of your pot with a wire screen in order to prevent the soil running out. Now place a layer of grit down followed by the Bonsai soil. Now you should shape your Bonsai how you want it. Place the wire around the branches in a spiral shape, and gently bend the branches to the exact shape you want them to grow in. Be careful, though, not to break or snap any of the branches you shape. Next remove as much of the soil from the root ball as you can but be sure to leave as many of the fine feeder roots as possible and then plant your Bonsai into the pot you have prepared.

Laser Hair Removal: Hair Raising Experience

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

More and more people are giving laser hair removal a shot! If you’re not into this hot, new treatment, then you’ve come to the right place. Imagine never having to deal with messy creams. Imagine talking to the grocery clerk and not having her stare at the hair on your upper lip. Imagine never having to hide your precious parts at the beach.

Stop imagining! You can make your dreams of hairless summers and hairless winters come true. First of all I believe it’s important for women and men to find out what causes abnormal hair growth before they start drastic measure to remove it. Doctors say hair usually grows abnormally due to hormones. Once you’ve determined whether you have health concerns related to your hair, then you can decide on the appropriate remedy.

I can tell you lasers are safe and effective in the removal of unwanted hair. A trained specialist can help you determine what treatment is best for you using your skin and hair type. With lasers you don’t have to worry about shaving, tweezing, or waxing now and forever. Forever sounds like a long time, doesn’t it? Lasers produce a beam of light that is used to remove hair. The light passes through the skin to the hair follicle. Once it gets to the hair it basically kills it. Neat, huh? The process only takes less than an hour.

Lasers are attracted to dark colors. You’ll get the best results if your hair is darker than your complexion. You’re wondering if the laser has any side effects. It does if you have a tan. Tanning and lasering leads to burning. Ouch, it really hurts so you’ll want to beware of adding the two in combo. Also, it’s important to note that the laser doesn’t do a thing for blondes, white or gray haired people.

If you’re not ready to give lasers a shot, then there are several other techniques on the market that can help you get rid of your hair-raising problem. Let’s talk about the only permanent hair removal known to man right now. It’s called electrolysis. If you’re scared of needles, then this is not the treatment for you. You’ll want to make sure that you have not waxed or tweezed within a few days of having a treatment. This makes the hair follicle easier for the electrologist to reach.

The electrologist inserts a tiny needle into each hair follicle and uses a short impulse of energy to kill the root. Sounds, cool, huh? The hair is tweezed out one at a time. Sounds like an awfully long process. However, it only takes a few hours. You will most likely need more than one treatment to kill all of your hair. There are electrolysis kits that you can use at home, but I wouldn’t recommend it. You’re better off using a licensed electrologist.

Speaking of problems, what’s yours? Everyone has a specific area of the body where they want to be bald. Women usually hate facial hair on their upper lips, chin and sides of face. Hairs in those areas don’t seem to bother men that much! Okay, I shouldn’t joke about it! Hair on the lip is very troubling to most women. It can be removed using a bleaching procedure.

Bleaching works if your hair is similar in color to your skin. Be careful, bleaching lightens hair in dark complexions. I’ll never forget someone with a dark complexion once asked me if she could use a depilatory creams on the lip. No way, don’t even think! My response was fast and furious. Depilatories are harsh on sensitive skin and should never be placed on the lips or eyes areas.

The important thing to remember about depilatories is you should use them on the legs and thighs only. Depilatory creams dissolve the keratin in hair. As you can imagine that’s some pretty strong stuff! Be sure to test patches of skin before you put the cream on. The cream can cause rashes and skin discolorations. It is possible to treat a negative reaction with an anti-bacterial solution and antibiotic.

Waxing on the other hand is a great way to remove hair from the legs and thighs and bikini area. Your skin will feel so clean, smooth and soft after this procedure. Waxing doesn’t irritate your skin the way shaving and creams do. However, waxing is a temporary hair removal procedure. Waxing is similar to the sugaring procedure that is also temporary.

Sugaring is becoming more popular for people who want to be hairless in the bikini area. The sugar is warmed not at all like the high heat that’s used in waxing. The warmed sugar is placed on the skin. Your technician will then remove the sugar with muslin strips. The sugar sticks mostly to the hair and not the skin. That makes it easier when it’s time to remove the hair. I highly recommend sugaring because the red bumps and other skin irritations are minimized with it.

You’re daring, right? You want a bikini wax, but you want it all over. Then, you’ll have to try what is called a Brazilian bikini wax. Have you ever been to Brazil? The natives are not at all ashamed of their bodies. The Brazilian wax removes hair all over the pubic area including the labia and buttocks. You can tell your technician how far to go, or not go. A patch of hair is sometimes left above the vagina.

Now, the procedure for getting a Brazilian wax is the same just about as with a bikini wax. You’ll be given a paper thong if you’re a little shy to put on for Brazilian bikini wax. Your hair will be cut using some scissors. The wax is then put on using a wooden stick. Strips of cloth are used to take the hair off. Tweezers are sometimes used to pick away stray hairs. Some folk’s say it hurts, others swear it works magic to improve their self-esteem and body image. You now have choices whether it’s shavers and creams or lasers and wax. You no longer have to live with a hair-raising experience. Get rid of it! The choice is yours.
