YouTube Users Can Now Test Their Broadband Speed
Friday, February 26th, 2010
Video speed is an important part of the viewing experience since it determines the amount of time required to wait before watching the video from start to finish.
YouTube has now introduced a video speed dashboard, which enables broadband users to determine the speed of their connection and also compare it with wider nationwide and global figures. This will provide information to broadband users who complain of slow video loading whether the problem lies with their broadband connection.
YouTube’s video speed dashboard is not a device, which increases the speed of downloading, but it provides evidence to dissatisfied broadband users that the fault may lie with their Internet service provider. The speed data is averaged over a period of one month so that any temporary fluctuations are not reflected in it. This gives you an accurate idea of usually what your speed is/
This new feature is worth giving it a try. You can log on to the my_speed section on the YouTube website where you can discover your average connection speed.
By making the video speed history data available, YouTube is aiming at keeping the users better informed on speed related issues. It also gives you the ability to compare your speed numbers with other users in your region. This makes it easier if you are thinking of changing your Internet service providers, as it allows you to compare your ISP with others.

Fate of UK Broadband to Be Decided by Next General Elections
Monday, December 21st, 2009According to the Broadband Stakeholders’ Group (BSG), the next general elections are deemed to have a huge impact on the next generation broadband roll out, especially if the elections turn out to be in favour of the Conservative party.
The uncertainties attached with the probable outcome of the impending elections might have a negative impact on the private investors, who might shy away from investing into the broadband market for the time being.
The BSG also pointed out the speculations on the approach of parties towards broadband policy in the

However if the Labour view is allowed to prevail, a purely industrial activism approach will be taken that will enable the market to predict problems.

Thoughts on the Internet for Job Hunting
Tuesday, December 8th, 2009A 2010 job hunting campaign is by nature really involved. While the net has offered a variety of new sites and ways to communicate, it also creates exaggerated competition for choice jobs and potential hurdles for job searchers.
Job hunts need to be thought of as a highly individual, highly targeted marketing process where you are the product. Your resume is an ad. Your extended network is your lead generating engine.
So where does the Internet fit in? At AACareers, we recently put up a job on Craigslist and got 650 resumes in a week. For one opening. That’s unreal competition.
Had the right person contacted us ahead of our posting that ad, they could have secured the job prior to getting all that competition. How? By knowing someone at our organization who became aware of the job prior to posting. Everyone was aware of the job for at least a week before it was posted. Who in your network might know of a job that’s coming open soon?
So the good news is that job sites give you a sense of who is hiring, and for what kinds of careers. But once those jobs are posted, the rivalry is wild. You can still compete, if you have a well honed resume, designed to appeal directly and clearly to the recruiter. And if you have practiced interviewing – so you don’t stumble at a critical point.
Another problem to be aware of is how easily you can be investigated on the internet. As we Googled several candidates, we ran into some pictures and comments that were in questionable taste. Nothing larcenous, but enough to sway our thinking about who to hire.
AA-Careers provides a comprehensive set of services for Bay Area job seekers, providing our clients a personal career consultant, a managed job hunting campaign, modern tools like a personal website, video, highly targeted resume, and much more. Let us know if we can help you.
Be careful out there, and good hunting!
Government Likely to Stick with the Proposed Fixed-Line Broadband Tax
Tuesday, September 1st, 2009The government has proposed a levy of £6 per year (50p per month) on all households with fixed phone lines across the country. However, treasury minister Stephen Timms had previously suggested that the plans for imposition of the broadband tax have been suspended for the time being.
The proposal was first voiced through the Digital Britain report and has been debated in the Digital Britain Forum since then. It is believed that the proposed levy, called the stealth tax, will generate funds to the extent of £150-£175m per year, which can then be utilized for the government’s Next Generation Access scheme that aims at ‘digital inclusion’ and ‘closing the digital divide’. The basic motive of the government is to ensure that in keeping with the technological advancements of the 21st century, each and every household across the country has ready access to an internet connection. So for those not online yet, they could be looking for a broadband provider sooner rather than later.
The idea is however being criticised for more than one reasons. The two contentious issues with the overall plan are that the proposed targets are not in line with the digital objectives and are not sufficient enough to achieve what the government is aiming at.
However, it seems certain that the government intends to finance next generation internet in some segments with public money, and the proposed election is not going to stall the scheme.
Number of Broadband Users Set to Hit Half Billion by Next Year
Saturday, July 18th, 2009Fuelled by a rapidly increasing subscriber base in the developing world, especially in regions like the Middle East and Africa, the broadband user base will cross 500 million by next year, says a study by market research group Futuresource Consulting.
The report, released recently, states that though subscriber addition in the developed world is slowing down as market penetration goes up, developing countries will more than make up for it as broadband subscribers will increase by more than a third in the coming five years.
On the technology front, the report states that 60% of the broadband connections would be on the DSL platform, and 20% on cable technology. Currently,
