YouTube Users Can Now Test Their Broadband Speed

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Video speed is an important part of the viewing experience since it determines the amount of time required to wait before watching the video from start to finish.

YouTube has now introduced a video speed dashboard, which enables broadband users to determine the speed of their connection and also compare it with wider nationwide and global figures. This will provide information to broadband users who complain of slow video loading whether the problem lies with their broadband connection.

YouTube’s video speed dashboard is not a device, which increases the speed of downloading, but it provides evidence to dissatisfied broadband users that the fault may lie with their Internet service provider. The speed data is averaged over a period of one month so that any temporary fluctuations are not reflected in it. This gives you an accurate idea of usually what your speed is/

This new feature is worth giving it a try. You can log on to the my_speed section on the YouTube website where you can discover your average connection speed.

By making the video speed history data available, YouTube is aiming at keeping the users better informed on speed related issues. It also gives you the ability to compare your speed numbers with other users in your region. This makes it easier if you are thinking of changing your Internet service providers, as it allows you to compare your ISP with others.

If you need to know more about broadband, or the various ISPs, look at broadbandgenie.co.uk. I found some useful information on, and offers from Tiscalli Broadband; it is worth a look at the website for and their comparative table of broadband UK providers, which includes an analysis of their products and services.

Fate of UK Broadband to Be Decided by Next General Elections

Monday, December 21st, 2009

According to the Broadband Stakeholders’ Group (BSG), the next general elections are deemed to have a huge impact on the next generation broadband roll out, especially if the elections turn out to be in favour of the Conservative party.

The uncertainties attached with the probable outcome of the impending elections might have a negative impact on the private investors, who might shy away from investing into the broadband market for the time being.

The BSG also pointed out the speculations on the approach of parties towards broadband policy in the UK. According to them, the Labour party is quite positive about providing a minimum of 2Mb broadband access to every household by the end of 2012, while the Conservatives have made it clear that broadband is not on their priority list.

The chief executive of the Broadband Stakeholder Group, Anthony Walker, talked about the state of affairs with respect to the opposing views held by the two parties at the Westminster forum. He said that if the Conservative approach is taken into consideration, the market mechanism would be given precedence, in a sense that the government would look at new entries into the market that can increase the value of market and deliver more than expected.

However if the Labour view is allowed to prevail, a purely industrial activism approach will be taken that will enable the market to predict problems. Walker also pointed out that if there is a hung parliament, the broadband roll out can be seriously jeopardized.

Thoughts on the Internet for Job Hunting

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

A 2010 job hunting campaign is by nature really involved. While the net has offered a variety of new sites and ways to communicate, it also creates exaggerated competition for choice jobs and potential hurdles for job searchers.

Job hunts need to be thought of as a highly individual, highly targeted marketing process where you are the product. Your resume is an ad. Your extended network is your lead generating engine.

So where does the Internet fit in? At AACareers, we recently put up a job on Craigslist and got 650 resumes in a week. For one opening. That’s unreal competition.

Had the right person contacted us ahead of our posting that ad, they could have secured the job prior to getting all that competition. How? By knowing someone at our organization who became aware of the job prior to posting. Everyone was aware of the job for at least a week before it was posted. Who in your network might know of a job that’s coming open soon?

So the good news is that job sites give you a sense of who is hiring, and for what kinds of careers. But once those jobs are posted, the rivalry is wild. You can still compete, if you have a well honed resume, designed to appeal directly and clearly to the recruiter. And if you have practiced interviewing – so you don’t stumble at a critical point.

Another problem to be aware of is how easily you can be investigated on the internet. As we Googled several candidates, we ran into some pictures and comments that were in questionable taste. Nothing larcenous, but enough to sway our thinking about who to hire.

AA-Careers provides a comprehensive set of services for Bay Area job seekers, providing our clients a personal career consultant, a managed job hunting campaign, modern tools like a personal website, video, highly targeted resume, and much more. Let us know if we can help you.

Be careful out there, and good hunting!

Government Likely to Stick with the Proposed Fixed-Line Broadband Tax

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

The government has proposed a levy of £6 per year (50p per month) on all households with fixed phone lines across the country. However, treasury minister Stephen Timms had previously suggested that the plans for imposition of the broadband tax have been suspended for the time being.

The proposal was first voiced through the Digital Britain report and has been debated in the Digital Britain Forum since then. It is believed that the proposed levy, called the stealth tax, will generate funds to the extent of £150-£175m per year, which can then be utilized for the government’s Next Generation Access scheme that aims at ‘digital inclusion’ and ‘closing the digital divide’. The basic motive of the government is to ensure that in keeping with the technological advancements of the 21st century, each and every household across the country has ready access to an internet connection. So for those not online yet, they could be looking for a broadband provider sooner rather than later.

The idea is however being criticised for more than one reasons. The two contentious issues with the overall plan are that the proposed targets are not in line with the digital objectives and are not sufficient enough to achieve what the government is aiming at.

However, it seems certain that the government intends to finance next generation internet in some segments with public money, and the proposed election is not going to stall the scheme.

Number of Broadband Users Set to Hit Half Billion by Next Year

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

Fuelled by a rapidly increasing subscriber base in the developing world, especially in regions like the Middle East and Africa, the broadband user base will cross 500 million by next year, says a study by market research group Futuresource Consulting.

The report, released recently, states that though subscriber addition in the developed world is slowing down as market penetration goes up, developing countries will more than make up for it as broadband subscribers will increase by more than a third in the coming five years.

India would definitely be one of the key countries to watch out for, said Patrick Pfandler, senior market analyst at Futuresource. With its huge population and a market penetration of just over 2% for broadband, the user base is set to jump five-fold by 2012 to twenty-five million subscribers.

On the technology front, the report states that 60% of the broadband connections would be on the DSL platform, and 20% on cable technology. Currently, Japan and South Korea enjoy the best download speeds, pegged at close to 30 Mbps. In contrast, Ofcom recently released a statement that average net speeds in the UK were around 3.6 Mbps (click best broadband for latest info). Clearly we have some distance to catch with in the new super fast digital world.

More Bad News for Tiscali as IPTV Fails to Catch up

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

With a goal to enlist 200,000 customers by the fourth quarter of 2008, Tiscali UK embarked upon a journey that seems to have ended in disaster. It has been reported that the company has been able to enlist only 100,000 customers, half of what it had aimed for.

Tiscali UK is already in the news for its constantly diminishing subscriber base (64,000 broadband customers have left it recently), and a poorly performing broadband TV service could be the final blow to its survival. The company is already in dire straits financially after a recent buyout deal collapsed, and with no respite in sight for its debt obligations. Having to fight all this and at the same time face the performance related criticism coming its way is taking a toll on the ISP especially as the other broadband providers benefit from customers looking elsewhere for a service provider offering the best broadband.

Tiscali UK had acquired HomeChoice, an on-demand broadband TV service (IPTV), in 2006. However, the company could not improve its performance and eventually ended up with a service that not only recorded depressing statistics but also dragged Tiscali into financial troubles. In spite of all this, Tiscali has no manifest intention to cease the provision of its IPTV service.

Hopefully, Tiscali will find means to bounce back, failing which it will be left with no choice, but to face insolvency.

New Short-Term Contracts for Businesses from Easynet Connect

Monday, March 9th, 2009

During times of an economic slump like this, most people and businesses are constantly struggling to balance budgets and are unwilling to commit to long-term contracts. Keeping this in view, Easynet Connect has some good news for businesses that are looking for a new Internet service.

The company is providing new ‘no minimum term’ Internet packages for a limited period. With these packages, businesses can get a new business broadband connection without having to commit to the usual one-year contract. Instead, there will be a rolling one month contract which can be terminated through a 30-day, penalty-free notice period.

The launch of this new offer is Easynet Connect’s response to the demand for more flexibility in Internet packages. The company has also promised that their quality of service and other features of their packages will not be affected by the new contract terms. For example, a customer who opts for the EtherStream package will still get speeds an ‘up to’ 40Mb speed. All Easynet Connect packages available to businesses are being offered under the new contract, with the only exceptions being the services that are provided over BT’s network.

Chris Stening, Managing Director of Easynet Connect says that these new short-term contracts are an attempt by the company to break the standard pattern of the industry and go an extra step to meet customer needs. He adds that this offer will provide small businesses flexibility in connecting to the internet, and help them survive the recession.

In the past it was cool when someone had a tape recorder. But now you carry it with you everywhere you go. You can even get GPS directions to anywhere you want to go.

The first patent for a wireless phone was issued to Nathan B. Stubblefield in 1908. Nokia is currently the number one manufacturer of wireless phones as of today. There are more manufacturers out there such as: Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, and LG.

When you talk into the wireless phones your voice is changed into radio waves. The then travel through the air until the next tower picks up that signal. From there the signal travels around the system until it reaches a main station. From there it is pretty much the same as a landline phone. At this station the radio waves of your voice are changed back into the auditory form so that the recipient can hear you talk.

Cell phones are also known for emitting a frequency that could be harmful. Just check with your wireless provider for them to tell you the frequency that comes out of your phone. Reports have been made that the radio frequency can cause cancer and other harmful conditions.
