Maximize the Nuts

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Optimizing the best poker online hand is an important part of a successful casino game. When you get the best hand, it’s imperative that you get the most out of it by getting as much of your opponents’ money into the online poker pot as you can. Drawing a winner is just the beginning-you’ve got to find a way to build up the pot as well. It’s a fine line-verbetting the pot can scare everybody out of the hand, and underbetting can lead to a few round of checking, which won’t fatten the pot for you. A key part of properly playing a winning hand is knowing how your opponents perceive you. If your opponents think that you’re a tight player, coming out betting probably isn’t the best way to go, since they’ll be likely to put you on a good hand and fold. If you’ve got a rep as a tight player, feign weakness by checking and hope someone tries to buy the pot. If you’re pegged as a bluffer, you can loosen up your betting a bit and act like you’re trying to buy the pot. Make it affordable to see the next card-bet two or three times the blind, and hopefully someone will either call you or re-raise you.

Poker Information Superhighway

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

The great central conflict of poker comes in the idea of the solid, pocket, made hand and the one that is drawing. Who will win the coin flip race? Will the open-ended straight draw hit one of its eight outs to suck out on the pocket queens? In the random redistribution of shuffling the 52 cards, there is such an array of outcomes. This is what makes poker such an electrifying and obsession-based game, resulting in so many poker shows you can hardly turn on any channel these days without running into Chris Ferguson or Phil Ivey or whatever new phenom internet professional poker players are making their way to the top winning seats from online satellite poker tournaments as and ending up on the ESPN.

There are so many ways now to take your poker skills to the next level. Whatever form of game you might be into, from Omaha, stud, razz all the way to the old school games like five card draw and baccarat, there is so much information online now in poker forums, poker book reviews, poker videos and live poker hands with deep pro analyses of poker online tournament strategy, cash game strategy, how to win short handed, heads up, or other forms of play, all the way down to how to grow your bankroll, how to bluff, and so on. The world by now is an oyster of information for the player who is ready to get in and go.

PLO-eight All Draws Hand

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

In a cash poker game last night, I felt really bad for one of my poker online buddies who pushed his money in on a massive drawing hand. I feel bad because he lost and was likely a huge favorite. In a 4 way pot with a lot of action, he flopped the nut low draw, with the nut flush draw and he was open ended. He had A, 2, 5, 6 with two spades. The flop was 7, 8, J with two spades. There was a raise preflop, but being an Omaha online poker game and a small stakes game at that, many players go in to see this flop. Someone bet pot, another player caller, another raised pot, my buddy went all-in, the original better folded, and both other players called. The first had 10-9 for the made straight. The 2nd had A, 2, 2, 7. He announced, that he’d assumed since he had a pair of 2’s he figured he was very likely to e the only one on the nut low draw. Unfortunately for him, my buddy also had A-2 and was on the same low draw with the nut high outs. The turn came an off suit 7. There was a pair on the board, but it helped the player with pocket 2’s a little. He gained trips, and could scoop with a 2 or an ace, but there were very few of either left. Any spade would win it for my buddy still on the river, and practically any low card would give him some money back. An off-suit King peeled on the river and the straight played for high and no low hand had been made. On the side pot, trip 7’s won for high,

Forced to Call

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Oftentimes, in the course of play of just about any regular online poker player, one will find themselves in a situation where, according to the math, you are “forced to call” a bet, even when you are behind. For instance, when you are late in a poker online tournament and short stacked, and the big blind alone is a hefty portion of your stack, the pot odds in relation to the number of blinds you have left can dictate that a call with any two cards is the correct play. In a situation such as this, where, say, you have 40% or more of your stack in on the big blind, you are getting more than 4 to 1 on your money to call any pokerraise your blind with any two cards. Seeing then that if you have even seven deuce against the raiser’s pocket aces, you are still getting about even money to call the hand. Not to mention that if you do fold the hand, you will have so little left that the next time you are in the blinds you will be literally forced to go all in (as the big blind will cover your whole stack), and then even if you win you are hardly winning any chips at all.

Investing in the Casinos

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

As the global stock market has evolved, so too have the trading practices. One of the areas international investors have been looking at closely as of late is the online gaming businesses.

Currently, the market value of the online gaming and poker industry is estimated at around 10 billion USD and is expected to grow to closer to 100 Billion in the next 10 years.

And that, according to onlinecasinoreports.com is a fairly conservative estimate. If all goes well, and the companies continue to trade at around 15-20% of their earnings, the potential for growth could potentially reach 2 Trillion USD.

While the passage of the UIGEA in 2006 caused stock in the poker industry, at least in the US, to drop drastically, they have been on a steady climb as a whole despite the recent 2008 downturn.

Some economists call these companies an investment oasis in a time where the rest of the poker market is struggling.

As far as short versus long term investing goes, market indicators show that these investments are most suited for longer term goals, as a dramatic short selling could actually drive the prices down substantially.

This is especially true for US investors looking for long term safe havens for their cash. And in a market where the credit crunch is hitting doubly hard with the falling housing market, it seems that assurance and confidence is just what these investors need.

Halloween Party Ideas: Host a Halloween Party at a Bar or Club

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Hosting a Halloween party in your own home can be stressful, expensive and time-consuming. Hosting a party in your home, however, is not your only option! Many cities have bars and clubs that will allow you to host a party for Halloween. So long as you can guarantee a certain number of guests will attend, they may be willing to give you a section of the bar or club to call your own. Here is a step-by-step guide to plan your party:

1. Decide on a guest list.
Type or write it out.Who will you invite? How many people? Anticipate that about 15% will decline.
2. Choose a venue.
Depending on the number of people on your guest list, choose a venue that can accommodate your party. Check to see which venue will provide you with a private space.
3. Pick your theme.
A Halloween theme is the obvious choice but you can go further than that. Choose your favorite Halloween movie. Allow guests to dress accordingly. Don’t forget to ask the venue manager if you are permitted to decorate. If so, make it personalized and fun!
4. Send invitations.
Inform your guests of all the details. If there is a cover charge, let your guests know how much it will be. If you will be footing the cost of all, some or none of the drinks, convey this as well.

Bruce Lee: Best Poker Player Who Never Played?

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

I’m going to venture to say that legendary martial artist, Bruce Lee, is the best poker player that never went professional. Bruce Lee embodies all the important characteristics and skills of a perfect poker player.

Since poker is a highly analytical and mathematical game that combines elements of probability and strategy against other poker players, it takes a certain methodical and thorough person to become a great poker player. Bruce Lee encompasses this vigor and systematic approach in his martial arts training. Not only does he train his body but he also trains his mind so that he is mentally tough. Discipline is also a key trait to have in properly managing your bankroll so that you never recklessly bet large sums of money in which you can not afford to lose. With such a background in staying disciplined and maintaining well-versed in different philosophies, it is no wonder why I strongly believe that Bruce Lee had what it takes to become one of the greatest poker players ever.

Bruce Lee is known for understanding his enemies and understanding their psychology and motivations so he can predict their next moves. Of course, this skill comes in handy when attempting to read poker players’ tells and bluffs. I guess we can never know whether or not the legend that is Bruce Lee could have made millions from
